Much as retailers had planned -- and hoped -- lines formed early Friday morning at Cascade Station and, at each store's doorbuster hour, opened smoothly.

Folks stood with several jackets on during a steady downpour after getting in line at the Best Buy near Portland International Airport around 2 a.m.

"It was pretty good," said Zach Hayes, lugging two Blu Ray DVD players he picked up for around $50 and a cut-rate GPS navigator. He and his sister, Beth, liked the prices but Zach admitted, "it's really more of a tradition at this point."

He loaded up his car knowing that as an employee of that same Best Buy, he'd have to be back for the continued craziness at noon.

By 6 a.m., the line at Staples had quickly formed and within a matter of minutes, zoomed into the store. Shoppers beelined for lap-top computer for less than $300. Confused, a few ran through the stores and realized that they'd have to get into another line.

"I'm here, aren't you?" said one female shopping, aggravated as she tried to find her way through the store, its many lines and her spouse. "I don't even know what I'm supposed to be getting."
