Brush Fires Shut Down Parts Of I-20 In DeKalb, Rockdale Counties Posted: 17 Feb 2011 02:25 PM PST By Tony McNary, CBS Atlanta Reporter POSTED: 5:16 pm EST February 17, 2011 UPDATED: 1:06 pm EST February 18, 2011 DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The movie Toy Story 3 kept 6-year-old Issiah McCutchen occupied while he and his family were stuck in traffic for almost two hours on Interstate 20 Thursday."Thank God for DVD players and movies! The wait has been horrible just sitting on the side of the road, stopped in traffic with a 6-year-old who had to go to the bathroom," said Judy McCutchen.A lot of people were trying to get home, when DeKalb and Rockdale county fire crews were battling several brush fires along the westbound side of the I-20.A DeKalb County firefighter said the brush fire between Wesley Chapel and Panola Road was intense."This was a 4- to 5-acre fast moving brush fire," said Captain Scott Stroup.Stroup said flames from that fire rose nearly 30 feet high."They kept it out of these multi-family homes due to the quick and efficient actions," said Stoup. The smoke was like a blanket over the interstate, which is why officials closed it from Sigman Road in Rockdale County to I-285 in DeKalb.Firefighters could been seen between the trees, in the shadows putting out hot spots of another fire that ate through parts of Hillandale Memorial Gardens.Fire officials said the largest brush fire burned up to 60 acres."I think they were all intentionally set because we had multiple fires in the same area on I-20 which is unusual," said Battalion Chief Winfred Smith.Smith said he believes someone drove west on I-20 and tossed something of their car to start those fires."I hope they catch who set those brush fires cause they sure messed up traffic today," said driver Joe McCutchen.
