NAGPUR: Three persons in their 20s pinched a friend`s ATM card and withdrew Rs 1.43 lakh within a week. They used the money to buy electronic gadgets like television, DVD players, cell phones and also on partying and drinks.

Irshad Sheikh (20), a resident of Gurudev Nagar, was shocked to learn that his trusted friends, who are also his neighbours, were involved in the crime. Yogesh Rajurkar and Santosh Surjuse stay next door while Nikhil Ramteke is a resident of Panther Nagar.

Sheikh, whose parents had expired few years ago, has been staying with his younger brother in a rented room of one Pandarinath Surigunjewar since the last two years as his own house at Dighori was under renovation.

After his parent`s death, Sheikh inherited 32 acres of land and Rs 50 lakh. Only a few days ago, he had sold some property for Rs 12 lakh and had deposited it in the bank.

Though the theft took place on December 27, the matter was reported to the police by Sheikh only on Wednesday. Rajurkar had gone to meet Sheikh took when he fled with the ATM card kept on a cooler. Rajurkar then met Santosh and Nikhil at a wedding ceremony and hatched the robbery plan.

For seven consecutive days, the miscreants withdrew cash around 15 to 20 times from nearby ATM centres of different banks. The first transaction was of Rs 5,000 and subsequently they withdrew Rs 20,000 every day.

"The miscreants bought six costly cell phones, two for each, and also a TV, DVD player and branded shoes costing Rs 4,000 while the rest was spent in drinks and cigarettes," said a cop from Nandanvan police station.

Sheikh told TOI that for a week he did not suspect anything and did not even search seriously for the ATM card. "It was not the first time that the card was missing. This has happened many times and I used to find it after some days from my jeans pocket or from somewhere in the room," said Sheikh.

When Sheikh finally reported the matter to the police, they asked him to check the balance in the account. He was shocked to learn that Rs 1.43 lakh had been withdrawn. Later, the cops got the list of transactions from the bank.

The majority of transactions were made from a particular private bank`s ATM centre. "We tried to get the footages from the bank. Since it had got deleted, we managed it from another bank from where the miscreants had withdrawn money. Sheikh was called to see the footages and he was shocked to see Rajurkar in it," said the cop.

All the three miscreants were arrested from their residence. They later confessed to the crime.

Sheikh told the cops that Rajurkar and Surjuse used to behave normally with him and never showed any guilt. "They even helped me search for the card. Rajurkar even borrowed money from me to show that he is short of it. He even accompanied me to the police station to file a complaint," he said.

Password from cell phone

Irshad Sheikh told police that Rajurkar had got hold of the ATM password from his cell phone. "Since I have a couple of cards, it`s not easy to memorize the numbers and hence I had saved the secret number as the password of my mobile phone," said Sheikh.

Once Rajurkar had taken Sheikh`s mobile for playing games when he had asked the password. "I told him the password and also divulged that the same four-digit number is my ATM`s code," said Sheikh.
