His name is Dexter Morris Jr., but you quickly find out that his admiring coworkers have shortened that to DJ.

Energetic and excited about his job, Morris, 20, is the person responsible for the stereos, televisions, DVD players and computers crowding the shelves at the Goodwill store on Mabry Street.

He has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair to get around, yet Morris has overcome his limitations to prove that he's an effective employee, and Goodwill's board of directors agreed — presenting him with a performance award recently.

"It's fun. I work with electronics, which is what I like to do," Morris said. "I have good people I work with."

After graduating from high school, Morris entered the Transition Program that is available at Lively Technical Center to help those with disabilities learn to function independently and learn job skills. The instruction ranges from cooking and other household tasks to a computer systems technology program and preparation for job interviews.

According to Lively, many students with disabilities who are working toward a special diploma still require ongoing support to maintain a life as employed and active adults. When they leave the school system, they face an uncertain future unless there is careful planning, preparation and connections to post-school supports.

Lively provides the classroom space and administrative support. Certified teachers and student case specialists provide the instruction.

Working with Tiffany Solomon, his support coordinator from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, he continued in a transitional work experience program that enabled him to get a six-month stint at Goodwill to try out the job.

When it comes to electronics repair, "We need people like DJ who can do it, who have the patience for it," Solomon laughed.

APD annually serves about 35,000 Floridians with such developmental disabilities as autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and others. For those who'd like to find their place in the workforce, APD's Supported Employment program offers intensive assistance and extended services to assist the person with performing their job.

Ongoing supports are provided by a job coach and include matching the worker with the right job, assistance with training to make sure the APD client is able to understand and learn the skills and regular monitoring. The services provided are based on each individual's own situation and needs, said Melanie Mowry Etters, APD's director of communications.

As customers file into the store and others prepare to leave with their purchases, Morris hurries off to assist.

"He is one of the most determined individuals I know," Solomon said. "He's well-liked, well-loved and has a big heart. He's willing to help people any way he can."

MIAMI (AP) - Miami International Airport is auctioning off thousands of abandoned items.

From DVD players and cell phones to a piano keyboard, everything will be on the auction block Saturday. The contents in the suitcases will be sold to the highest bidder, but must remain a secret until a sale is final.

Property owners usually have 60 days to claim their missing items before it goes into the auction pool. Past auctions have brought in $50,000. All the money goes into the airport's general fund.

One year, a bidder bought a suitcase for $150 and inside was approximately 25,000 British pounds.

This year's big draw may be a collection of abandoned bicycles.

SENATOR Pia Cayetano was in Davao City on Friday to turn over two DVD players and educational videos on breast cancer and other women-related issues as part of her campaign to strengthen women's health advocacy.

Cayetano, chair of the Senate committee on health, cited the city's achievements like the creation of women's code, creation of breastfeeding stations in malls, and other women's concern that the city prioritizes.

"In relation to women's month, Davao City is on top of my list to visit, not only because it is the most women empowered city in the Philippines but also for having such an empowered mayor," she said.

City Mayor Sara Duterte expresses her heartfelt gratitude to Cayetano for making Davao City as part of the senator's campaign on women's advocacy.

Meanwhile, women's groups had the opportunity to discuss with the senator the issue on reproductive health.

Cayetano said: "There is a need for a national policy on reproductive health, this should not be political issue, this should not be a moral issue. RH is not being imposed to anyone; it is simply providing women and family an information on what option they could have in raising their own family."

The senator said her committee already conducted six committee hearings on RH bill.

Whether on the Senate floor defending a legislative measure, or out in the communities to raise social awareness on health, women empowerment and the environment, or when leading sports activities for a cause, Cayetano is driven by the same passion and work ethic that has made her among the country's most accomplished young leaders.

She made a promise to the women's group that whatever women concerns that they have in mind will be given attention. "Just send me your concerns in writing and I will give an eye on it," Cayetano said.

Cell phone inventor saves friend — with his phone

VAIL, Colorado — Martin Cooper always expected everyone would have a cell phone one day. But he never imagined he'd use one to save a friend.

Cooper, now 82, is an avid skier — he owns a unit at the Liftside condos and put in more than 40 days on the mountain last season. But in industry circles, he's also known as the father of the cell phone.

After years of working for Motorola on portable devices from pagers to police radios, Cooper led a team that created the first cell phone in just 90 days in 1973. He was the first person to make a cell phone call in public, in that year, and his name is on the original patent.

You could say Cooper knows a little bit about the business.

A couple of weeks ago, Cooper took Masami Yamamoto, a friend and business associate, for his first runs at Vail. It didn't go well.

"We got off the first lift, I skied about 50 yards away and waited for him. He never showed up," Cooper wrote in a story about the event he sent to the Vail Daily. "After searching everywhere I could, I headed home to get his cell phone number. When we finally connected by cell phone, I discovered that he had skied off the side of a run that was a sheer cliff that dropped 10 feet to a narrow ledge and then another several hundred feet of steep descent into a wooded area.

"Fortunately for him, his leg caught onto the rope that marked the edge of the run. He was hanging upside down, still wearing his skis and unable to remove them. He cried out for help to draw the attention of the passing skiers but, since the lifts had closed sometime earlier at 4 p.m. there was little traffic on the trail and he was not heard."

Over the next 90 minutes or so, Cooper and Yamamoto exchanged several calls, with several more placed to the Vail Dispatch Center, often juggling two phones at once.

While Yamamoto's phone had a GPS locator, but it wasn't working well enough for rescuers to get a solid location. So the 75-year-old businessman dangled.

"He was my lifeline," Yamamoto said of Cooper.

Yamamoto said he struggled to free himself for five or 10 minutes, then settled down to try to get help. He managed to keep his own phone in a zipped pocket when he wasn't using it, and tried to explain where he was, no small task since it was his first time at Vail, and because the native of Japan discovered something about his language skills.

"I couldn't give intelligent information," Yamamoto said. "Speaking English upside-down is very difficult!"

The Vail Ski Patrol finally found Yamamoto a bit after 5 p.m. He was hoisted back off the ledge, then taken to Vail Valley Medical Center. Two days later, he was on a flight back to his home in California.

Both Yamamoto and Cooper praised the work of rescue crews, especially ski patroller Linsey Hinmon.

But the old friends still find it remarkable that the technology Cooper pioneered ended up playing such a big role in Yamamoto's rescue. And, no, it isn't unusual for Cooper to have two phones on him at once.

"Because I still speak a lot, I try every phone," he said.

Cooper these days has a Jitterbug — a basic cell phone invented by his wife, Arlene Harris — as well as a Droid X. Cooper expects to get one of the new Windows 7 phones soon.

When Cooper and his team displayed the first cell phone, much of the technology we take for granted today hadn't been invented yet. That leaves him amazed by today's smart phones.

"But they may have gone a little too far," he said. "They're difficult to use, and a lot of people are excluded." That explains the Jitterbug, he said.

Yamamoto is a veteran of the cell phone business, too — he licensed "smart antenna" technology from one of Cooper's companies for use in Japan.

"It's quite a coincidence," Yamamoto said. "He developed the first cell phone, and then he saved me with one."

KEY LARGO, Fla., March 8 (UPI) -- Florida authorities said a man accused of burglarizing a home and a boat was arrested thanks to a palm print discovered on a toilet seat.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said an arrest warrant was issued March 4 for Robert Johnson, 46, of Key Largo, after a palm print on a toilet seat at the burglarized home was traced to him, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Investigators said items taken during the Oct. 9 break-in include a TV, multiple DVD players, DVDs, a 12 pack of beer, a GPS device and electronic equipment from the homeowner's boat.

Johnson was found staying in a neighbor's backyard shed and arrested on two burglary counts and two counts of grand theft. He was jailed in lieu of $30,000 bond, the newspaper said.

If a bride and groom register for the wedding gifts of their dreams, but then are too embarrassed to tell anyone they have a list, are they still to blame if they are given 47 crystal salad bowls?

Such is the etiquette question that vexes modern urban Indian nuptials.

Wedding registries, unknown here just a few years ago, are the hot new thing. Well-to-do young couples are picking out china – and smart phones – at fancy shops and on gifting websites.

But the stigma attached to asking for a gift is so intense that few of them dare tell their parents or older guests that they have registered.

"A bridal list is the most practical way to do things," said Isha Siraj Kedia, CEO of a gift-list website called Lamhe. "But the resistance we're finding is, a couple makes a list and then their parents ask them not to share it." She gave a small sigh. "This sounds ridiculous, but we're setting it up with Facebook – then you can tell your friends and your parents don't have to know."

A typical Indian wedding invitation bears some variation on the phrase "Your blessings our only gift." But many guests, especially close friends and family, will bring a present anyway. Traditional gifts include saris, brassware, crystal or silver bowls, sheets and towels. The open secret is that many of these will be the very saris or brass Ganesh statues that the gifters received at their own weddings, and which may have cycled through an unknown number of weddings before.

But with many more young people today setting up house together, rather than moving in with the groom's parents as was traditionally done, there is a new need for home furnishings. In addition, middle-class Indians have a rapacious hunger for upscale electronics and high-end brands: The three most commonly listed items on Wishberry, another gifting site, are iPhones and BlackBerries; Blu-Ray DVD players and vouchers for shops such as Aldo and La Senza.

"Everyone wants things they can't afford themselves," founder Prinyaka Agarwal said.

But apparently they can't ask for those things themselves, either. The Wishberry site features a whole section on "spreading the word" to coach couples on how to phrase the news that they have a gift registry. It offers sample content, and suggests a variety of methods to get the word out – since no mother-of-the-bride in the nation would ever allow details of a registry to be included in a wedding invitation, Ms. Agarwal said.

"If you're really shy you get a friend to do it on your behalf. Or your sister sends an e-mail saying, 'My kid sister is getting married, get her what she wants' – and then it's not, 'I'm getting married, get me what I want.' "

The majority of their couples have used a Facebook plug-in on the site, she said. But even so, of every dozen couples that make a list, only two or three ever share it, she said.

Ms. Agarwal launched the site last July, motivated by the experience of her own sister's wedding. "I was very enthusiastic about opening the gifts," she recalled. Until she saw what was in the boxes: one ugly or obviously recycled present after the next. "There was even a Jesus statue – and she was a Hindu getting married to a Jain! That made me think, this needs to stop."

Ms. Agarwal said Wishberry registries seem most popular with young professionals who are "very mobile, very online" and have travelled abroad ("or at least they've seen the idea on Sex and the City") and who are more willing to flout custom.

On Lamhe (which is Hindi for "moments"), couples can ask for "experiences" (such as spa visits and home makeovers) as well as fridges and televisions. A wedding guest can contribute all or part of the cost. The site was created by four Mumbai women who have lived in the United States; their list makers (and list hiders) are all 25- to 30-year-olds from suburbs in Mumbai, Ms. Siraj Kedia said.

GoodEarth, a chic home-decor store that is a favourite of the urban middle class, has offered a bridal registry for the past six years. From a bride or two the first few years, they were up to 50 in 2010. Beenu Bawa, spokesperson for the chain, explained that it began when one of their most loyal shoppers saw her sister get married and receive 200 silver bowls. She hoped her own wedding would be different – and since she was marrying a foreigner, she thought a list for guests from his side might be socially acceptable.

The store put together a brief list of decor items for her to send to the foreign guests. But her aunt in Mumbai heard about the list, swept into the store – and bought up everything on it. The startled bride added items, Ms. Bawa recalled. More aunts, more frenzied shopping. "It got competitive: One aunt bought the whole dinner set. And then another aunt bought the same one."

A 27-year-old man reported a television, gaming system, games, DVD players and assorted DVDs stolen from his residence in the 800 block of 23rd St., Kenova, between Feb. 4 and Feb. 7.

ENTERING WITHOUT BREAKING/ARSON: A 47-year-old man reported a fire in an outdoor storage building valued at $10,000 between 8:30 and 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18. The incident occurred in the 2200 block of Sycamore Street. The property owners said the building contained $5,000 worth of furniture. The State Fire Marshal's office is handling the investigation.

ENTERING WITHOUT BREAKING/LARCENY: A 21-year-old woman reported that someone entered her residence in the 1200 block of Chestnut Street between 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 and 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, and stole a DVD player and miscellaneous DVDs. Items were valued at approximately $425.

SHANGHAI, Feb 18 — Shangri-La has debuted a new luxury five star brand with the opening of a new hotel in Shanghai February 18.

Kerry Hotels is a new five-star contemporary brand from Shangri-La which the company says provides "a seamless link between business, entertainment and recreation."

The new Shanghai Pudong property offers 574 guestrooms decked out with the latest technology such as DVD players, Nespresso machines, iPod docking stations and 40-inch televisions, all held within in-room consoles that also feature high stools and minibars.

As one would expect from a luxury brand, round-the-clock butler service is available on the seven floors of club-class accommodation, although the new dining/entertainment concept developed by Stickman Tribe (which also counts the Ritz Carlton Sharm El Sheik and the Conrad Hilton Dubai among its clients) is likely to be of more interest.

Here, the hotel's dining experience is broken down into three sections — the COOK, MEET and BREW — with COOK offering arguably the most impressive experience in the form of 11 live show kitchens cooking a panoply of Asian cuisine for an à la carte restaurant that seats 365 people.

The BREW, a contemporary pub with views of Shanghai's Century Park, is centred around enormous three-storey steel brewing vats which stretch up to the MEET, a steakhouse set to open in April.

Clearly not a brand that intends to do things by halves, the Kerry Shanghai is also home to Shanghai's largest hotel sports club, the 6,000 sq.m, three-floor Kerry Sports, which offers everything from spinning classes to a children's fantasy playground and a Chinese day spa also set to open in April.

The next Kerry Hotel is scheduled to open in Beijing next year, although a spokesperson for Shangri-La told Relaxnews that Kerry is "definitely a global brand," so it may not be too long before a new property opens up outside of Shangri-La's traditional Asian stomping ground.

It will join a host of top-end "lifestyle" brands launched in the past year by well-known hotel chains, including Jumeirah's new VENU Hotels and Vivanta by Taj. — AFP-Relaxnews

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A nice present Monday for kids at the Diamond Children's Medical Center.

Contractors who helped on the center's construction, donated two fun centers featuring video games, TVs and DVD players.

"They can play games, they can be involved in happy times, fun things, rather than the difficulties of their illness, and so we have found that it makes an immense difference for the children," said volunteer Tony Janik.

The fun centers are easy to roll up to the bed of a young patient. It helps out those fighting lonliness after visiting hours are over.
